Sustainable Mobility
About Lesson

In urban (transport) planning, it is important to understand why people move.

The aim is the satisfaction of their needs that cannot be satisfied in one place. Basically, it is about planning the “connection” of origins (where people travel from) and destinations (where they travel to).

It is therefore planned in 4 areas:

  1. planning the distribution of origins and destinations of roads (within spatial planning processes)
  2. transport infrastructure planning, i.e. connecting road origins and destinations (mostly within spatial planning)
  3. planning and managing the transport systems that provide the city’s transport services, while limiting the transport infrastructure
  4. mobility and transport planning, i.e. how people are going to use the transport infrastructure and the transport systems.

In order for the resulting mobility and transport in cities to be sustainable, it is important to link all 4 areas…

You will learn the basic terms that will help you better understand the subject in the following text.

If you plan cities for cars and traffic, you get cars and traffic. If you plan for people and places, you get people and places. - Fred Kent
